The House of Lords EU External Affairs Sub-Committee will hold a one-off evidence session asking what can be done to revise the growth of ISIL in Libya, and to tackle migrant smuggling.
Witnesses
The evidence session will take place on Thursday 9 July at 10:05am in Committee Room 1, Palace of Westminster. The witnesses giving evidence are:
- Sir Dominic Asquith, former British Ambassador to Libya
- Professor George Joffe, University of Cambridge
Areas of discussion
The evidence session will cover a variety of issues, including:
- The emergence of ISIL in Libya, and its connections to Iraq and Syria
- Migrant smuggling and human trafficking, and the effectiveness of EU action, including the EU naval mission in the Southern Central Mediterranean, in tackling them
- EU strategy to combat insecurity in the region
- Arms trafficking, and the effectiveness of the UN arms embargo
- EU and UK visibility in the Libyan Government-forming process, and EU influence in the wider region
