High level authorities and experts meet to promote digital transformation

THIRTY COUNTRIES OF THE AMERICAS, ASIA AND EUROPE HOLD VIRTUAL INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF DIGITAL GOVERNMENT FROM NOVEMBER 18 TO 20

The VI Ministerial Meeting of Digital Government was inaugurated today to promote the digital transformation of the governments of the Americas. The Electronic Government Network of Latin America and the Caribbean (Spanish initial Red Gealc ), with more than 17 years of existence, is the main mechanism for coordination and exchange of knowledge between the governments of the region in terms of digital policies.

The President of the Republic of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, and the President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Mauricio Claver-Carone, virtually inaugurated the meeting that will take place from November 18 to 20.

These meetings serve as a gathering point for ministers, high authorities and leaders of digital government to discuss the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation for the economic and social reactivation of the region, and exchange knowledge with other leading countries in the field such as the Republic from South Korea, Estonia, United Kingdom, Israel, Spain, Portugal and Italy.

Since March of this year, digital government agencies have had to assume a decisive role to face the emergency that emerge as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. In this context, many countries quickly established actions to generate health containment applications, digitize procedures to guarantee business continuity in public institutions, and develop solutions to mitigate the shock of the pandemic in education and the economy.

The VI Ministerial Meeting of Digital Government analyzes best practices and projects international trends for an essential digital transformation that facilitates economic and social reactivation in times when governments need to increase their efficiency to meet growing needs in a limited fiscal context.

The Red Gealc is an initiative of the countries of the Americas supported by the OAS and the IDB, it is a systematic horizontal technical cooperation mechanism through which exchanges aimed at developing, disseminating and implementing the best technologies are promoted, multiplied, strengthened and streamlined. digital government practices in support of institutional development processes and their advancement in terms of digital policies in the region.

During the days of the meeting, the results of studies on digital government in the region prepared by the IDB, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). The European Commission expert Tonnie De Koster will be the main speaker of the day and will share the achievements of the European Digital Agenda and the lessons learned for the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The plenary sessions of the summit will be public and everyone from the technology and public policy sectors of governments, academia, civil society and the private sector may participate in them.
