NCLH’s donation will directly support immediate relief needs, including food distribution, cleanup efforts and assistance for displaced families, while also contributing to long-term community recovery and resilience.
“These communities are facing immense challenges in the aftermath of these historic floods,” said Dan Farkas, EVP and general counsel, NCLH. “Supporting the communities we visit is central to our ‘Sail & Sustain’ program and our broader commitment to creating lasting value in the destinations we serve. We are focused on doing our part to help our partners and neighbors recover, rebuild and emerge stronger.”
Back-to-back Kona low storms brought unprecedented rainfall, triggering the worst flooding in more than 20 years and causing devastating damage across Oʻahu and Maui. The North Shore of Oʻahu was among the hardest-hit regions, where floodwaters displaced families, damaged homes and farms, and prompted thousands of evacuations and emergency rescues.
The Lāhui Foundation has been at the forefront of grassroots relief efforts, coordinating volunteer support, distributing essential supplies and funding community-led recovery initiatives across impacted areas. The North Shore Chamber of Commerce is working closely with local businesses and residents to restore economic activity and provide resources to those affected.
Both organizations expressed gratitude to NCLH for their support.

Tourism is a powerful driver of inclusive and sustainable growth, and Lithuania has made remarkable progress in positioning the sector as a pillar of national development
Tourism Doing Business – Investing in Lithuania provides a comprehensive overview of Lithuania’s dynamic tourism landscape. It emphasizes how the country’s solid institutions, advanced digital infrastructure, and stable policy environment have created a strong foundation for investors seeking long-term, sustainable opportunities. The publication also showcases Lithuania’s diverse tourism offer, spanning cultural heritage, wellness, nature-based experiences, and innovation-driven products that attract both regional and international visitors.
Its final chapter identifies concrete investment opportunities across the country, including emerging niches such as wellness tourism, rural tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) and sustainable accommodation. The report features 14 public, private and mixed projects with a combined potential value of up to EUR 692.2 million and serves as a call to action for investors to engage with national institutions and tap into Lithuania’s expanding tourism potential.
Lithuania is an active and valued Member of UN Tourism, contributing significantly to the Organization’s governance and strategic direction. The country currently serves as Vice-President of the General Assembly (2025), is a Member of the Executive Council (2023–2027), Vice-Chair of the Commission for Europe (2023–2027), and a Member of the Working Group for the Agenda for Europe (2025–2027). This level of engagement reflects Lithuania’s commitment to advancing tourism as a driver of sustainable development and innovation.
Vice-Minister Burokienė said: “Lithuania is honored to see our tourism sector recognized by UN Tourism as a pillar of sustainable growth and innovation. The Tourism Doing Business: Investing in Lithuania guidelines showcase not only our diverse cultural and natural heritage, but also our readiness to welcome responsible investment that strengthens communities and creates long-term value.
With projects worth nearly €700 million, Lithuania is opening new doors for investors who share our vision of sustainability and innovation. We warmly invite the global tourism community to partner with us in building a competitive, resilient, and inspiring tourism sector for the future.”
Looking ahead, Lithuania and UN Tourism will further strengthen their partnership with the launch of the Startup Challenge “Discover Lithuania”, to be unveiled during the International Tourism Forum: “Designing Travel – What’s Next in 2026?” in Vilnius on 29 January 2026. The initiative will encourage bold, tech-driven solutions that enhance the visitor experience while supporting sustainability and competitiveness.
]]>UN Tourism Executive Director Zoritsa Urosevic said: “Climate change is now one of the defining forces influencing the future of tourism, requiring faster advances in decarbonization, adaptation and regeneration, but most importantly investment required for the Net Zero transition. Our sector must align climate action with innovative approaches to strengthen resilience and ensure tourism’s competitiveness in the decades ahead.”
A key milestone was the inclusion of a Plan for Accelerated Solutions (PAS) for the tourism sector under the UNFCCC High-Level Climate Champions, supporting a unified approach to measurement, mitigation and adaptation, with particular emphasis on stewarding forests, oceans and biodiversity.
“The Plan for Accelerated Solutions builds on Brazil’s achievements in tourism GHG emissions measurement and sectoral adaptation planning, with support from the Inter-American Development Bank, as well as on countries’ priorities voiced through the Inaugural Meeting of the Interinstitutional Working Group on Tourism and Climate Action. It gives us an opportunity to scale local solutions into global pathways for tourism’s transformation”, said Ana Carla Lopes, Vice Minister of Tourism of Brazil
The PAS aims to support the development a Global Partnership for Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism to scale up solutions and access to finance – a mechanism stemming from the COP29 Declaration on Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism, which was endorsed by 70 governments, under the leadership of the State Tourism Agency of Azerbaijan.
COP30 placed strong emphasis on adaptation, with sessions exploring how destinations can integrate climate-risk data and adaptation measures into tourism planning, and strengthen the governance needed to guide implementation. The inclusion of tourism within national adaptation processes, community-led adaptation, nature-based solutions and the circularity of plastics, water and food were echoed as strategic measures with potential to support the Global Goal on Climate Adaptation.
Participants also explored pathways to accelerate alternative fuels, scale reforestation, restore corals, pilot blue carbon projects and unlock innovative blended-finance mechanisms to crowd in private investment for low-carbon and climate-resilient tourism projects.
UN Tourism and the Ministry of Tourism of Brazil launched a public call to advance “Regenerative Approaches to Climate Action in Tourism” through the participatory development of a briefing paper with the objective to drive a more holistic approach to climate action in tourism that enhances ecosystem health and community well-being, and strengthen the nexus across climate and biodiversity agendas.
In the spirit of the global mutirão, the Tourism Thematic Days on site were complemented by the Global Sessions on Climate Action in Tourism, organized with Travalyst and The Travel Foundation in collaboration with UN Tourism. These sessions ensured wide international participation and the exchange of solutions from all regions.
A special signing ceremony of the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism welcomed new signatories, including the iconic Christ the Redeemer Sanctuary in Rio de Janeiro, further broadening the global community committed to climate-aligned tourism pathways.

In this sense, and on the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5), Booking.com, whose mission is to make discovering the world easier for everyone, presents some insights and possible solutions to counteract the environmental impact of travel.
Perceptions of the Environmental Impact of Travel
Travelers are increasingly recognizing the multifaceted impact of travel in several aspects:
71% of Argentines recognize its impact on local economies, showing a growing awareness of the economic ramifications of tourism.
55% recognize the impact on the natural environment, highlighting concerns about the preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity.
60% identify the impact on local communities, indicating a recognition of the social and cultural implications.
Additionally, a significant portion of respondents in Argentina (60%) express personal concern regarding the environmental impacts of travel, highlighting a widespread awareness of sustainability issues within the travel industry. However, optimism remains somewhat moderate, with only 44% feeling optimistic about the potential for positive environmental impacts from travel.
Potential to Counter Travel Impacts
Perceptions on potential strategies to mitigate the environmental impacts of travel reveal varied perspectives:
40% of Argentines believe that airlines and hotels have the greatest potential to counteract these impacts, suggesting a recognition of the role of industry players in driving sustainability initiatives.
Meanwhile, 45% attribute this potential to individual travelers, emphasizing the importance of responsible travel behaviors and consumer choices.
Surprisingly, only 18% perceive major travel platforms as significant agents in addressing environmental concerns related to travel and tourism, indicating a potential gap in public perception about the role of online travel services in the promotion of sustainability.
“These findings highlight the importance of sustainable practices in the travel industry and the need for collaborative efforts to address environmental challenges,” said Jimena Gutierrez, general manager of Booking.com for Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. “As stakeholders continue to prioritize sustainability, initiatives aimed at promoting responsible travel behaviors and supporting accommodations that go the extra mile to comply are essential to foster a more sustainable future for global tourism.” Jimena concluded.
]]>Nicolas Huss, CEO of HBX Group, opened the event by talking about the growing influence of Generation Z on travel trends: “Generation Z travelers are reshaping the industry with their preference for last-minute bookings and package deals. tourist. However, their brand loyalty remains relatively low,” said Huss. “Importantly, sustainability is non-negotiable for them, which significantly influences their travel choices.”
Lauren Atlass, VP Commercial for North America, and Gisela Blok, VP Commercial for Latin America, reported a notable increase in interest in travel, with HBX Group recording a 25% increase in searches, amounting to 5.6 billion daily searches. Among the five fastest growing destinations for Latin American travelers are Hong Kong, Shanghai, Joao Pessoa, Curaçao and Salvador de Bahia. For their part, North American travelers are more interested in Mazatlán, Zurich, Barbados, Sorrento and Tokyo.
Increase in domestic travel and last-minute vacations in the Americas
MarketHub Americas stands out as one of the most important events of the year for HBX Group, highlighting the changes and opportunities in the US and Latin American travel markets.
According to HBX Group data, Mexico is emerging as the main destination and origin market in LATAM. Brazil, which registers the most significant growth in the region, follows as the second most popular destination, and the Dominican Republic as third. The increase in internal travel within Mexico and Brazil is also one of the highlights of the region. It should be noted that the average stay in LATAM is 3.3 nights, reflecting the region’s attractiveness for longer vacations.
In North America, New York remains the top destination, attracting both domestic and international travelers. Las Vegas and Miami follow. Domestic travel dominates the US market, showing an upward trend compared to the previous year. Travelers to this region prefer shorter trips, with an average stay of 2.4 nights. This average has recently fallen to 2.1 nights, driven by the increase in domestic travel, where quick getaways and short vacations are more common.
It is worth highlighting the substantial increase in last-minute bookings in North America, especially in the last four weeks. This increase is mainly due to the expansion of the national market, where travelers are increasingly making more spontaneous travel decisions. The highest levels of bookings in North America are seen between August and September, indicating a peak travel period in late summer.
]]>The ESG Shipping Awards International 2024, the world’s inaugural event of its kind, was established in partnership with the Ministry of Shipping and the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping. Awards were presented in 11 categories to recognize companies in the global shipping industry that demonstrate innovation and exceptional commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices.
“We’re committed to leading the way in sustainable cruising and are incredibly proud to be recognized for the remarkable progress we’ve made toward cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reducing food waste across every aspect of our operation,” said Bill Burke, chief maritime officer. “The programs honored in the ESG Shipping Awards are just three of countless examples of decisive actions we’re taking to shrink our environmental footprint and pursue net zero GHG emission by 2050.”
Carnival Corporation and AIDA Cruises were recognized in the following categories:
Gold Climate Change Leader Award:
Carnival Corporation received top honors for its Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) program, a fuel technology it pioneered within the cruise industry as the best readily available fuel to deliver immediate GHG reductions. The 10 LNG-capable ships Carnival Corporation currently has in operation, in addition to three more expected for delivery, will collectively represent approximately 25% of its total fleet capacity by 2028 and are adaptable for renewable fuels when they become widely available. By investing in LNG powered ships and taking other decisive climate actions, the company is producing 10+% less total GHG emissions today than 2011, its peak historical year.
Gold Technology Leader Award:
AIDA Cruises was recognized for having onboard AIDAprima the largest lithium-ion battery energy storage system in passenger shipping, with a capacity of 10-megawatt hours. Installed in 2022 and extensively tested in 2023, this innovative technology can be used to supply energy to the ship and allows it to operate in a net-zero emission mode for limited periods of time. This next-generation battery storage system is just one example of AIDA’s important efforts to reduce GHG emissions across its fleet.
Bronze Environment Leader Award:
Carnival Corporation was also awarded for its aggressive food waste reduction actions to minimize unused food across every aspect of food preparation and dining services onboard. This includes investments in innovative food waste management technologies such as biodigesters and dehydrators that naturally break down and responsibly dispose of unused food. Together, these strategies help reduce the company’s “foodprint,” delivering a 40+% reduction in food waste per person relative to its 2019 baseline. This performance surpasses the company’s 2025 goal, building increased momentum toward its 50% reduction target set for 2030.
Collectively, these recognitions underscore Carnival Corporation’s commitment to sustainability leadership and to reducing the company’s environmental impact. For more information on the company’s long-term sustainability vision and progress under its six focus areas – climate action; circular economy; sustainable tourism; good health and well-being; diversity, equity and inclusion; and biodiversity and conservation – visit Carnival Corporation’s dedicated report website, www.CarnivalSustainability.com.

]]>The EnviroManager+ system was jointly developed by Carnival Corporation and LR OneOcean during an intensive five-year collaboration involving senior maritime officials, shipboard crew members, company and industry environmental experts, regulatory compliance leaders, and technology innovators. Together the team created the most encompassing, data-intensive adaptation of the LR OneOcean platform to date designed to give shipboard crews improved, automated, and intuitive tools to support passage and environmental planning, as well as enable enhanced environmental requirement monitoring during voyages.
Carnival Corporation’s nine world-class cruise lines and 90-plus ships sail all over the world, making more than 22,000 port calls each year to over 800 destinations, each with potentially different environmental regulations governing vessel operations. Rigorous requirements on air emissions, purified water release, and many others, can vary considerably on a day-to-day or even hour-by-hour basis depending on a vessel’s location and onboard equipment. As a result, it is important for crews to have ongoing, easy access to detailed information regarding all environmental requirements affecting each specific area traveled along a cruise ship’s itinerary.
EnviroManager+ provides this by visualising the precise boundaries of over 500 environmentally regulated zones worldwide via an intuitive, user-friendly interface. This data is overlaid with the many more restrictive, industry and Carnival Corporation-specific environmental policies to represent a complete view of the full scope of all environmental rules and regulations, regardless of governing body or jurisdiction. Updates to all policies and regulations are routinely and automatically shared with the fleet via a shore-to-ship data service within the LR OneOcean digital platform, which also automatically sends approved passage plans ashore for easy access to shoreside personnel.
The application accelerates and simplifies voyage planning by arming ships’ officers with easy-to-use digital planning tools, including automatic route generation capabilities, to plan voyages and environmental operations. It also automatically validates the accuracy and permissibility of planned operations and navigational routes, delivering actionable intelligence to assist decision-making, reduce risk, and ensure continuous compliance throughout every voyage. Meanwhile, both shoreside and onboard personnel have access to regulatory information that can be monitored in real-time against each vessel’s position, speed, and planned route.
John Haeflinger, Senior VP, Sustainability and Maritime Policy at Carnival Corporation, said:“Complying with environmental regulations is a top priority, and it is a real challenge for the cruise industry, as regulations and requirements constantly evolve and become more complex. As an industry leader proactively engaged in marine stewardship, we need to be confident that our operations meet all environmental requirements, including our own policies, which are often more restrictive. Given our longstanding engagement and collaboration on this project, LR OneOcean EnviroManager+ now gives us that confidence. I am convinced that the LR OneOcean product suite is the most comprehensive and complete maritime environmental regulatory database on the market today that is integrated with an automated passage plan solution for oceangoing vessels. I invite all other oceangoing ship operators committed to environmental compliance to consider giving it a try, because together we can build on the software’s capabilities for the greater good.”
Martin Penney, CEO, LR OneOcean said: “We are delighted to have partnered with Carnival Corporation in the successful adoption of EnviroManager+ across its fleet and support their journey to efficient environmental compliance management. Navigating the complex, rapidly changing regulatory landscape is a growing challenge in shipping. Operators, like Carnival Corporation, often cruise in areas of ecological significance and know how important staying environmentally compliant is to their guests. We applaud Carnival Corporation’s commitment to its ship- and shore-based team members, providing them with software to ensure environmental compliance in their passage planning and execution.”
