Located along a stretch of one of the most beautiful beaches in the world in Punta Cana, Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort is leading the way for exercising sustainable initiatives and has been honored, for the fourth consecutive year, with a recertification from Green Globe, a premier worldwide certification and improvement program designed to improve economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
The multi-resort complex, Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort features two adjacent hotels – 589-room, adults-only Barceló Bávaro Beach and the 1,402-room, family-friendly Barceló Bávaro Palace. Throughout the year, the resort has upgraded their facility with new energy-saving technologies. With new motion sensors in offices and employee bathrooms, timed lights in the hallways, LED lights throughout the property, and heat extractors powered by wind energy, the resort is now operating under considerably more efficient regulations than ever before.
In addition, every year the complex organizes a recycling competition to commemorate World Environment Day. This activity take place within the facilities of the Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort complex where employees from different departments demonstrate their commitment to the environment by undertaking projects with recyclable materials and as well as creativity, the posterior usefulness of their creations played a very important part in the decision made by the jury. This year, due to the effort and dedication shown by the participants, the first place was awarded to all the staff of the hotel Barceló Bávaro Beach Adults Only for their creation of a play park for children, which was subsequently donated to a local school in the area.
This builds on the successful collective recycling program that was integrated in 2012 to decrease the resort’s contribution to local landfills — earning Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort their first Green Globe Certification.
In its commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment, the hotel frames its policy in some fundamental principles: Waste management, energy and water savings, training of employees and clients about environmental sustainability, preserve and mitigate all the consequences of the development of tourism, both in the environmental and social aspects, and help the sustainable development of the region.
“Being environmentally conscious is of key importance to us. Our resort thrives on the beauty and cleanliness of our surroundings; enhancing our green initiatives to preserve what’s most important to us remains a top priority,” said Giovanni Sbrogio, Sales Director of Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort.
In order to achieve a Green Globe certification, a property’s environmental standards must meet a set of criteria as determined through a strict auditing process. Maintaining the certification requires hotels and resorts to pass another audit in the following year that monitors their compliance with modifications required by Green Globe.
Continual recognition from the program is an indication of Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort’s dedication to preserving the environment and embracing the 21st-century paradigm shift of taking care of our planet. Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort is now living proof that success and sustainability can go hand in hand.
