Sustainable Travel: Tourists are responsible for counteracting environmental impacts

The 2024 Sustainable Travel Report presented annually by Booking.com is a sustained effort towards generating environmental awareness and sustainability. Data on the environmental impact of travel and strategies to mitigate its effects allow us to delve into the perceptions and attitudes that shape the sustainable travel practices of the Argentine travel community.

In this sense, and on the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5), Booking.com, whose mission is to make discovering the world easier for everyone, presents some insights and possible solutions to counteract the environmental impact of travel.

Perceptions of the Environmental Impact of Travel

Travelers are increasingly recognizing the multifaceted impact of travel in several aspects:

71% of Argentines recognize its impact on local economies, showing a growing awareness of the economic ramifications of tourism.

55% recognize the impact on the natural environment, highlighting concerns about the preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity.

60% identify the impact on local communities, indicating a recognition of the social and cultural implications.

Additionally, a significant portion of respondents in Argentina (60%) express personal concern regarding the environmental impacts of travel, highlighting a widespread awareness of sustainability issues within the travel industry. However, optimism remains somewhat moderate, with only 44% feeling optimistic about the potential for positive environmental impacts from travel.

Potential to Counter Travel Impacts

Perceptions on potential strategies to mitigate the environmental impacts of travel reveal varied perspectives:

40% of Argentines believe that airlines and hotels have the greatest potential to counteract these impacts, suggesting a recognition of the role of industry players in driving sustainability initiatives.

Meanwhile, 45% attribute this potential to individual travelers, emphasizing the importance of responsible travel behaviors and consumer choices.

Surprisingly, only 18% perceive major travel platforms as significant agents in addressing environmental concerns related to travel and tourism, indicating a potential gap in public perception about the role of online travel services in the promotion of sustainability.

“These findings highlight the importance of sustainable practices in the travel industry and the need for collaborative efforts to address environmental challenges,” said Jimena Gutierrez, general manager of Booking.com for Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. “As stakeholders continue to prioritize sustainability, initiatives aimed at promoting responsible travel behaviors and supporting accommodations that go the extra mile to comply are essential to foster a more sustainable future for global tourism.” Jimena concluded.
