Chief among the milestones, Sakuu’s Kavian Platform is set to be commercially available for customer orders starting in January of 2025
- Kavian Platform successfully printing battery electrodes using customer-specific chemistries
- 55 percent reduction of CO2 emissions in electrode manufacturing
- Cypress Li-Metal battery cells now reaching 1500+ cycles
- Named in TIME Best Inventions of 2024 and crowned FII8 Innovator 2024 at recent Future Investment Initiative Institute annual conference (FII8)
SAN JOSE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sakuu®, a leading provider of commercial-scale equipment and technologies to the battery manufacturing industry, has achieved notable momentum in advancing dry-process battery technology. Sakuu’s Kavian® Platform — the world’s first manufacturing solution to print battery electrodes — is able to successfully dry print anodes and various cathodes from the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) and Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) family of electrodes, flexibility that will also enable new chemistries such as aluminum-ion and sodium-ion.
Research by management consulting company McKinsey & Company projects that the market for battery cell components is expected to grow to $250 billion by 2030, driving the need for innovation to reduce manufacturing bottlenecks and scale output accordingly. BloombergNEF included Sakuu in its recent report naming new lithium battery technologies set to disrupt the storage market. Kavian is slated to be commercially available for platform orders in 2025.
Sakuu has also demonstrated significant momentum in its licensable high-energy, high-power Li-Metal battery cell chemistry being augmented with Sakuu’s dry electrode Kavian process. The UN38.3 certified battery cell has achieved 1,500 cycles at 100% DoD to 80% SOH @ 0.3C/1C, again setting the industry lead in commercially ready Lithium metal chemistry performance and up from 1,000 cycles DoD in April of 2024.
In addition to technological milestones, Sakuu has made significant strides in strengthening customer engagement and securing new revenue-generating partnerships with industry leaders. These moves reflect the company’s ongoing commitment to delivering value through innovative solutions.
“As the demand for battery manufacturing platforms continues to surge, Sakuu’s commitment to advancing dry-process technology is unwavering,” said Robert Bagheri, CEO at Sakuu. “Our technological and business development achievements this year offer innovative and practical solutions for the top problems in the battery manufacturing process today, while allowing OEMs the flexibility to scale up at a production level to meet the scale, sustainability, and efficiency demands of the future. We are very proud to be developing the most advanced sustainable battery manufacturing equipment here in the US.”
New benchmarking of Sakuu’s Kavian Platform shows that, in addition to significant cost-savings and efficiency gains, Kavian also improves sustainability. Notable benefits include:
- 55 percent reduction of CO2 emissions in electrode manufacturing
- 100 percent reduction of toxic solvents and water compared to traditional wet coating processes
- 91,122 metric tons of CO2 emissions reduced per 3 GWh/yr R2R plant replaced
As a result of Kavian’s strides in sustainability and dry electrode printing, Sakuu has been honored with top awards by prestigious organizations. On October 30, 2024, Sakuu’s Kavian platform was named to TIME’s list of Best Inventions of 2024 in the Manufacturing and Materials category. Additionally, on October 31, 2024, Sakuu was named FII8 Innovator 2024 at the Eighth Annual Future Investment Initiative Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
