NH Hotel Group will reduce its carbon emissions by 20% before 2030

The company is the first Spanish hotel company to establish emission reduction targets scientifically validated by the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative

Sustainability is one of the main commitments and strategic values of NH Hotel Group that acts transversely for the entire company. In this endeavor, the multinational has committed to reduce its carbon emissions by 20% throughout its value chain until 2030, thus avoiding the emission of more than 70,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The objectives of the NH Hotel Group, which have been scientifically validated by the global Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative – a leading alliance for promoting the business sector against climate change in which CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute and World Wide Fund for Nature -, are specified in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of the entire activity chain of scope 1, 2 and 3 (direct and indirect emissions) by 20%, based on emissions Registered in 2018.

The establishment of this objective marks the road map of NH Hotel Group towards a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of its activity in the coming years, aligned with the purpose set in the Paris Agreement to limit the increase in global temperature below of 2ºC, and join the efforts that are being made globally towards the transition to a low carbon economy.

According to Rufino Pérez, Chief Operations Officer & Global Transformation Leader of NH Hotel Group, “The establishment of this scientifically supported objective will help us move towards a business model based on a low carbon economy and join all the opportunities that This can be presented to us. The achievement of this milestone will imply an accelerated and large-scale transformation, in which we will involve all our stakeholders and for which the organization’s commitment is maximum ”.

This new commitment to sustainability acquired by NH Hotel Group is part of its new Strategic Plan. With it, the Company takes another step in the efforts made so far to lead the climate strategy of the hotel sector. It should be noted that NH Hotel Group was already recognized in early 2019 for its progress in this regard, receiving an A-score from the CDP Climate Change (previously known as the Carbon Disclosure Project).

“We have been supporting climate change mitigation since 2007, since then reducing the carbon footprint of our operations by 67% and achieving in the last year that 70% of the total energy consumed came from renewable sources. However, now we want to be even more ambitious with the objectives we have set ourselves, ”added Pérez.
