During the January-October period of 2018, the commercial exchange between the Dominican Republic and the United Kingdom totaled US $ 210.41 million, registering an increase of 1.23% with respect to the same period of the previous year.
In this year, exports to the United Kingdom amounted to US $ 88.65 million, for an increase of 0.54%. While imports totaled US $ 121.76 million, representing a growth of 1.73%.
The Dominican trade deficit with the United Kingdom also increased, this time by 5.04%, which represents US $ 33.11 million.
The data is contained in the fourth bulletin on Foreign Trade Dominican Republic-United Kingdom, product of the inter-institutional collaboration agreement between the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) and the British Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (BRITCHAM).
Exports
Dominican exports to the United Kingdom have a high concentration, only 10 products represent 92.77% of the total. Bananas and bananas were established as the main export items, representing 79.52% of the total exported, with US $ 70.5 million. They are followed by mangoes (7.62%) and colors for artistic painting (1.33%).
In Port Manzanillo, transactions of greater value are operated with the United Kingdom. For the period January-October 2018 it represented 70.8% of the total exported. In descending order, it is followed by the Caucedo Multimodal Port (21.4%) and the Las Americas (3.4%), Punta Cana (3.2%) and Puerto Plata (0.9%) airports.
Fruits, as the main item, are mostly exported through Manzanillo, because the largest banana plantations are located on the Northwest line near that port. Then Caucedo and Punta Cana Airport follow.
In the case of vegetables, the Punta Cana Airport is the main issuer of merchandise, followed by the Puerto Plata Airport.
While pigments and dyes, which represent the third most important chapter in that period, are exported through Puerto Caucedo and Las Américas Airport. The same goes for diverse manufactures.
The fifth group, composed of pharmaceutical products, is exported through Las Americas, Caucedo and Punta Cana.
Imports
As regards the acquisition of British products by Dominican nationals, there is also a concentration. However, it is not as high as in the case of exports. In this case, 10 products represent 57.33% of the total.
Whiskey, the main product imported from the United Kingdom, represented 34.17% of the total imported in the first 10 months of the year, with US $ 41.6 million. In descending order of value, there are medicines (5.42%), dump trucks (5.26%) and cylinders or bottles (3.45%).
Goods arriving in the DR from the United Kingdom
Multimodal Caucedo is the port with the highest value reception from the United Kingdom. For the period January-October of this year it represented 55.5% of the total exported. In descending order, it is followed by Las Américas Airport (17.1%), Eastern Haina Port (15.8%), Puerto Santo Domingo (8.0%), Punta Cana Airport (1.1%), Puerto Manzanillo (0.9%) and Cibao International Airport. (0.8%). The whiskey enters mainly through the ports Multimodal Caucedo, Haina Oriental and Santo Domingo.
While vehicles, cars and tractors, enter through Haina Oriental, Santo Domingo and Caucedo. The largest proportion of pharmaceutical products, which represent the third most important import chapter, enters through Las Américas Airport.
While the mechanical devices, as well as the glasses and manufactures, are received mainly through the Caucedo Multimodal Port and the Las Américas Airport.
